Abstract: Based on Theme-Rheme theory of Systemic-Functional Grammar and four thematic progression patterns raised by Zhu Yongsheng, this paper makes a qualitative and quantitative research of thematic progression patterns and thematic structures of 40 English academic abstracts written by Chinese and English-speaking scholars. The authors try to discover the similarities and differences in their writing styles and explore the reasons for their differences in the selection between marked Theme and unmarked Theme, expecting to bring unprecedented interpretations and suggestions to abstracts writing.
