Abstract:

Objective To determine if introducing a new model of bedside nursing handover was associated with improvements in the handover process, as well as patient and nursing staff satisfaction. Background Evidence suggests that clinical handover at the bedside provides a patient focused approach to care, and allows patients the opportunity to be involved in their own care. Methods A prospective study was undertaken in a Cardiology Unit to evaluate the introduction of a new model of nursing handover. Results Six months after implementation, bedside handover demonstrated improved time efficiency, 100{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} patient involvement and improved adherence to the handover protocol. Satisfaction surveys from patients and nurses indicated positive outcomes. Conclusion Nursing handover at the bedside focusing on active patient involvement has been implemented successfully. Transformational leadership practices have provided a platform to implement change to nursing practice.
