Abstract:

In order to predict future environmental changes in estuaries and support the establishment of optimum management plans, this study aims to develop a GIS-based estuary information system coupled with the EFDC model. For the target area, the estuary region around the Yeongsan River in S. Korea was chosen. To construct a spatial database for the GIS-based estuary information system, data on the water quality, flow, and sedimentation were collected. The collected data were converted into spatial data and stored in a spatial database so that they would be available during GIS-based searches. To predict environmental changes in the selected estuary, the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) model was used. To connect the GIS-based estuary information system with the EFDC model, the system was designed using the ‘loose coupling method’. After the system design, the system was developed via program coding with ‘MS Visual Basic .NET 2005’ and ‘ESRI ArcGIS 9.3.1 Engine’. In this study, it was confirmed that the input data of the EFDC model could be revised and executed on the GIS platform. In addition, it was found that the model execution results, which were automatically converted into GIS data, could be visualized simultaneously along with other thematic maps. Thus, the developed system will be useful for quantitatively predicting and analyzing environmental changes in estuaries. The results of this study can be used to establish Best Management Practices (BMPs) for estuary management. However, further study needs to be conducted regarding how to apply the system in practice and in research activities.
