Abstract: The characteristics of the retained sludge in a downflow hanging sponge reactor were investigated in order to provide further understanding of the sewage treatment process in the reactor. The organic removal and sulfur oxidation conditions were found to be different for the first layer and the following three layers. Almost half of the organic matter was removed in the first layer, and thus the organic removal was found to derive from absorption onto the sponge medium, followed by aerobic and anaerobic biodegradation. In the second to the fourth layers, the oxygen uptake rate from the filtered sewage substrate was 5.78– 27.6 mg-O2 g−1-VSS h−1. The sulfate concentration increased 1.5– 1.9-fold in the first layer, with almost no subsequent change in the second to fourth layers. Thus, it was shown that oxidation of sulfide in the influent was completed in the first layer.
