Abstract:

Background and Objectives: The serum fatty acid profile is a predictor of cardiovascular risk. The fatty acid profile is affected by the dietary intake. In Indian population, dietary patterns vary from region to region and within region as well. The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between dietary intakes, serum lipids and fatty acid composition in a low income rural setting in North India. Methods: A cross- sectional study was conducted in 2 villages of Haryana. Blood samples were collected for lipid and fatty acid analysis from a subset of the population. The information on dietary intake was collected using 24- hour dietary recalls. The serum fatty acid analysis was done using gas chromatography. Data on serum lipid, fatty acid profile and dietary intake was used to calculate the partial correlation coefficients. Results: Lipid profile analysis showed the participants within designated cut- offs of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C and HDL-C. The fatty acid analysis showed higher saturated fatty acids (SFA, 45{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) content than mono- unsaturated or poly- unsaturated fatty acids (MUFA, 26{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}; PUFA 25{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). The serum trans fat content was less than 1{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of total fatty acids. Milk intake showed a significant correlation with HDL-C (r= 0.236, p= 0.013) and SFA (r= 0.269, p= 0.004). A significant correlation was also observed between fats intake and HDL-C (r= 0.212, p= 0.027). Overall, correlations between intakes, lipid and fatty acids were low (p=0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that intakes of trans fat are low in general but the nutritional quality of diets is poor and needs targeted interventions for improving the same.
