Abstract: The novel SiO2-glycerol hybrid was successfully synthesized and employed as a vehicle to encapsulate a bioactive agent with low polarity, i.e., ibuprofen. The ibuprofen encapsulation efficiency of SiO2-glycerol nanohybrid was higher than that of pristine SiO2 aerogel because that the pore-filling glycerol/water/alcohol mixture acting as a drug carrier (reservoir) to encapsulate ibuprofen. Interestingly, IBU encapsulation efficiency increased with decreasing the pH value of synthetic condition, which was probably due to the fact that the polarity of pore-filling solution decreased with decreasing the pH value of synthetic condition. On the other hand, glycerol reacted with SiO2 to form SiO2-glycerol complex demonstrating a weakly cross-linked structure. Moreover, the nanostructure and subsequent drug release behaviors of the modified SiO2 aerogel were significantly altered by the pH value of synthetic condition.
