Paediatric emergencies admissions to the Emergency Department (ED) often place children in an environment better suited to the treatment of adult patients. Problems encountered with this approach result in issues around unfamiliarity of provision of specialist paediatric care and caring for children in an often frightening environment. The development of the Paediatric Flow Nurse (PFN) has now meant children are treated and supported by a trained paediatric nurse and triaged and treated in a more timelier and effective manner.
