Abstract: This paper explores issues of relationship development, co-presence and ‘country-mindedness’ in relation to the perception of Australian rural and remote communities toward their local accountant, and how these conceptions consequently affect their role in community leadership. Regional and remote communities are often vital to a country’s long term strategic, economic and cultural sustainability. Small accounting practices, as part of a group of professionals operating in these locations, perform a crucial role in the ongoing sustainability of rural and remote areas.
