Abstract:
Estimation of blood biochemical parameters is an important tool to evaluate the health of the chicks as it serves a valuable indicator of early diagnosis of certain disorders and diseases. Scanty literatures are available on the assessment of biochemical parameters of emu chicks. Hence, a study was conducted to evaluate the biochemical, enzyme and mineral status in emu chicks. The study was conducted in forty apparently healthy emu chicks aged about four to five months reared at the units of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University. Blood samples were collected from the right jugular vein in heparin coated tubes and plasma was separated by centrifugation. Biochemical, enzymatic and mineral parameters were analyzed by commercially available kit. Biochemical parameters such as total protein, albumin, total cholesterol and enzymes, alkaline phosphatase and creatinekinase and minerals, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were estimated. The data were subjected to statistical analysis and results were expressed as mean ± S.E. These findings from our study serve as reference for biochemical, enzyme and mineral values in emu chicks in India.
