Abstract:

The DNA barcoding gene, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase c subunit I (COI) gene was employed to identify commercially important marine fishes in the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 54 fish specimens were sampled from five landing sites in Northern Peninsula Malaysia, of which 48 produced satisfactory sequences for further analysis. Morphological inspection classified the specimens into 18 species within 16 genera and 12 families. While most molecular identifications were in concordance with morphological identification, there were a few ambiguities, resulting in 21 species within 18 genera and 12 families. These taxonomic discordance observed between different approaches, highlight the importance of utilising complementary tools in precise species identification. The phylogenetic analysis confirms that COI barcoding gene is effective in identifying up to the species and genus levels but higher taxonomic relationships such as family and basal level were not well resolved.
