Abstract:

Loneliness and despair have increasingly become a threat to man in modern society. Either as a cause or a consequence, loneliness can be an antecedent or a symptom of psychological disorders, such as depression. Man and his social contacts may predict to a large extent, his physical and mental health. The interaction of personality traits and individual perceptions in the social context can help in promoting adjustment. The aim of the present paper is to explore the impact of an increasingly individualistic society on loneliness and despair through two case studies, and the efficacy of psychotherapeutic intervention. While intervention exists across various schools of psychotherapy, the concerns for reaching out at multiple levels, collaborating across mental and physical health at the individual, family and community level along with stigma, can become challenging for the therapist and the patient involved.
