Abstract:

This paper presents the new, theoretical typology of passengers airport. Taking passengers’ travel time as a major concern, the idea aims to improve airport efficiency in that matter. The short review of modern airport masterplanning and passenger terminal architecture as well as the evaluation of factors determining passenger travel time is presented as a background for introducing new solutions. A holistic approach, taking into account different aspects of aviation industry (technology, globalization, strategic planning, masterplanning, architectural decisions) was implemented into the proposed passenger airport typology. The presented idea refers to a mid-size, international, transit airport with its capacity at a level of approximately 30 million passengers per annum. The complex calculations of operational areas were made according to Airport Development Reference Manual.
The new model includes masterplan interventions aiming to aircraft turn-around time reduction. The shift of the layout and functional division for take-off and landing runways, together with angled, drive-through apron stands for aircrafts is proposed. The new topology also introduces vertical separation of airport functions. It proposes locating all important systems of supplying aircraft underground. This allows almost complete elimination of ground handling vehicles (baggage tractors and trailers, fuel cisterns, air compressor cars, sewage collection cars), reducing turn-around time and operational costs for airport. Finally, in the new model, a traveler-oriented terminal space organization is suggested. With minimum level and direction changes, the terminal allows fluent and intuitive flow of passengers. Different functional zones - landside and airside - are reflected in architectural form of the building. Continuing the idea of vertical functional separation, the proposed scheme resolves the typology of a pier building. As an under-apron system of branched passageways leading to gates formed as detached towers, it allows unobstructed circulation of aircrafts on the ground level.
The presented research rather develops further than questions existing, efficient models of aerodromes, pointing out a demand for passengers’ travel time reduction. Moreover, this holistic approach postulates to introduce low-tech interventions for airports rather than to base only on perfecting hi-tech solutions to increase airports functionality. Hence, it may bring substantial operational cost savings as well.
