Abstract:

Global climate change has recently become progressively severe. Protecting the environment under economic developments and progressing toward sustainable urban development has become a common topic worldwide. Most studies have proved that considering wind and building orientations during initial planning stages of building constructions, using wind flow for removing heat in the air, and improving wind environments effectively mitigated the urban heat island effect.
Vernacular architectures are an extension from the natural and human conditions of local environments. Arcade is one of the vernacular architecture form in Taiwan. In recent years, as urban population and high-rise buildings increase, vernacular arcade design are gradually replaced by uncovered sidewalks. To determine the importance and influence of arcade in subtropical regions. The paper presents the results of extensive field measurements which took place in high-rise building arcade with different characteristics in terms of street geometry and H/W ratio. The experiment site is a high density residential area in the Taipei University Specific District of, Taiwan .The experimental measurements include wind speeds, air temperatures, relative humidity, and solar radiation. The results showed that arcade architectural spaces sustained stable wind environments, impeded the influence of outdoor solar radiation, and provided adequate intermediary space for pedestrians. Furthermore, the importance and benefits of arcade architectures in subtropical environments were proven, providing a reference for prospective urban planning.
