Abstract:
The implementation of AESOP® as a community healthcare information system was the culmination of over a decade of consultation and research into health literacy, people-centred health care and design of plain language healthcare messages. It evolved at the crossroads of citizen engagement, coalface clinical documentation and contract accounting. In the process, key methodologies for supporting ordinary people to achieve their personal best health outcomes were developed: recognizing the 7 C’s of successful health navigation and defining the institutional barriers in healthcare settings that block PLAIN WORDS® communication between healthcare providers and the people they serve. This paper outlines the journey of AESOP®: the challenges faced and achievements realized.
