Abstract:
This study aimed to reveal changes in self-rated basic social skills and basic nursing attitudes of novice nurses. A questionnaire survey was conducted targeting 199 new graduates of a university school of nursing in Japan before graduation and 8 months after graduation, during March 2011 to November 2013. The results demonstrated an increase in “ability to identify tasks” and “ability to consider things carefully”, and a decrease in “initiative”, “ability to influence others”, “performance ability”, “planning ability” etc., suggesting difficulties with transition from the fellow-student group into the multi-generational professional workplace. There was a high correlation between basic social skills and basic nursing attitude, and negative correlations could be found between “basic social skills” and “wish to quit”, indicating the importance of training programs aimed to develop basic social skills of nursing students.
