Abstract:
Introduction: One in ten patients admitted to hospitals will be unintentionally harmed and around 50{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} of these events could have been avoided if lessons from previous incidents had been learned. There has been a raft of recent evidence from practice, research and policy outlining the need for the development of the quality of safe, effective and person centred care (Chochinov, 2007: Firth Cozens and Cornwell, 2009: Maben, Cornwell and Sweeney, 2010). With UK patient safety estimated to cost the NHS £2 billion every year, there is an urgent need to work towards a shared and consistent approach to improving healthcare quality, reducing harm to service users and their families and reducing the economic strains on European health services. The aim of ISTEW project is to develop shared academic and practice based programmes that enable European universities to build improvement capacity and capability within their own healthcare workforce. Educators have a vital role to play in supporting providers in building capability and capacity in the healthcare workforce to support the delivery of quality healthcare. (UWS, 2014) Methods: The project is organized throughout 12 work packages (WP). Each WP has one specific aim and its own methodology. Delphi method has been used; also Gap Analysis, Case Studies, Minimum Data Set (MDS), and Systematic Review were carried out. Results: After 19 months of ISTEW project development, all targets established have been achieved successfully. After the research process, an Evaluation Framework for testing Healthcare Improvement Science (HIS) programmes/modules content is being developed to ensure the quality of the modules developed and every course containing HIS. Also, a definition of Healthcare Improvement Science was stated in Bled, Slovenia (2014) during a facetoface meeting, literature review about policies, healthcare professionals capabilities/competences wereconducted. Dissemination and exploitation activities have been designed and developed through the whole project. Discussion: As the core values of Healthcare Improvement Science, the ISTEW Project aim is to develop learning modules generating knowledge to create students awareness about delivering of personcentered care that is safe, effective, efficient, equitable and timely. ISTEW project will improve patient outcomes, health system performance and population health, reducing health costs, adverse events and improving professional mobility along the countries participating.
