Abstract:
This work aims at investigating use of polysaccharide as matrix agent such as xanthan gum, in an attempt to formulate sustained release matrix tablets containing zaltoprofen. The sustained release (SR) tablets of zaltoprofen were prepared by direct compression method. The excipients used in this study did not alter the physicochemical properties of the drug, as revealed by the FTIR spectrometry and DSC. The prepared matrix tablets showed good mechanical properties in terms of hardness and friability. Xanthan gum based tablet formulations showed high release retarding efficiency, and the studies indicated that the drug release can be modulated by varying concentrations of polymer. Mathematical analysis of the release kinetics indicated the nature of the drug release from the matrix tablets followed non-fickian diffusion obeying zero order kinetics.
