Abstract:
Girardinia heterophylla Decne is found in Temperate and sub-tropical Himalayas from Kashmir to Sikkim, and in Assam and Khasi hills. Triterpenoids are the major compounds present in this plant. This study was undertaken primarily to investigate the effects of total triterpenoids extract of Girardinia heterophylla roots (TTGH) on blood glucose, lipid profiles and antioxidant effect on diabetic rats induced by high fat diet and streptozotocin (STZ). High fat diet (HFD)-fed and STZ induced diabetic rats were treated with the TTGH for 15 days. A series of parameters were tested such as fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood lipid profile, serum insulin (SI), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), nitric oxide (NO) and glycosylated serum protein (GSP), and Diabetic rats treated with TTGH showed decreased concentration of FBG and GSP compared with the control group. Meanwhile, the levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG) and low density lipoprotein (LDL) in the TTGH treated diabetic rats were lower, and the high density lipoprotein (HDL) level was higher than in the control diabetic rats. Furthermore, the TTGH treatment decreased the MDA and NO levels, while increased SOD and GSH levels in diabetic rats. All these experimental results substantiated the hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic properties of the total triterpenoids from Girardinia heterophylla on diabetes and its complications, possibly by a strong antioxidant activity.
