Abstract:

The most common bacteria representative for healthy horses in the autumn-winter period in Poland is Staphylococcus aureus, both the conjunctival sac and the nostrils, although it is more frequently isolated from nostrils (45.45{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) than than from conjunctiva (29.54{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). Considering frequency of isolation, in the nostrils the second most common microorganism was Enterococcus spp. (27.27{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and succesively Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli, which were detected in the same proportion (22.72{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). The most frequently isolated conjunctival microflora after Staphylococcus aureus represents two genera: Bacillus spp. (20.45{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}) and Enterococcus spp. (18.18{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}). Given the similarity of conjunctival and nostrils microflora, genera representative of the site were: Pseudomonas spp. for conjunctival sac only and Corynebacterium spp., Citrobacter spp., Klebsiella spp. and Pasteurella spp. for nostrils only.
