Abstract: The purpose of this study is to show what counselors did in the treatment of patients with clinical depression and other mental illnesses, and how this can be used with people who display no psychological abnormalities, to enhance well-being by promoting positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning and achievement. One such example is sandplay therapy, which is not well known outside of Japan, but widely used within the country. The activity of sandplay therapy itself is fun, and allows for free expression of the conscious and unconscious mind. Access to a 3D printer expands the subject’s possibilities for creating new worlds, which explore new depths of their conscious and unconscious mind. In this study, counselors were encouraged to view the subjects and their sandplay therapy worlds in a positive way. After the sandplay therapy, the subjects heard the counselors’ interpretation and reported that the experiences were both enjoyable and rewarding. Even though they may have felt a little uncertain, after doing sandplay therapy they believe that the future can be purposeful and are motivated and willing to work towards their goals. Using this type of therapy has proven to be a beneficial form of positive psychology which promotes wellbeing.
