Abstract:

Promoting healthy behaviors is a difficult task. In recent years, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers have proposed behavior change strategies and developed persuasion systems for promoting healthy behaviors. Although theories have presented the potential influence of social and gamification factors, it is still unclear how to develop social game modules to enhance usability of healthy behavior persuasion systems. This paper presented the iterative design process of a social game module along with its gaming and social influence components. Two prototypes (“Treasure Hunters” and “Chicken Raisers”) of game module were proposed. The “Chicken Raisers” game included a novel “prosocial rewarding” design. Our user studies show that adopting “Chicken Raisers” game not only provides more fun and playfulness, but increasing social interactions by 480{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} when compare to adopting the baseline “Treasure Hunters” game in a healthy behavior persuasion system.
