Abstract:
Bridges devoted to the exclusive use of pedestrians and cyclists are beginning to be used extensively to reconnect urban areas that have been previously severed by the construction of multi-lane highways, rail lines, canals and rivers. Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel (AESS) is being used in the design and construction of the majority of these bridges. This paper will examine a number of International, high profile pedestrian bridges and their means of use of AESS to satisfy the unique, multi-faceted requirements of this relatively new bridge typology and new segment of urban infrastructure. The focus will be to examine primary design criteria and to distill best practices from current examples.
