Abstract:

A comprehensive analysis of the energy demand of a residential building over its entire life, under influence of various window design is rare. To address this, the aim of this study was to analyse the total energy demand associated with a multi-storey residential building assumed as a reference building for Sydney/Australia. A parametric analysis was applied to quantify the effects of building envelope design variables on the Life Cycle Energy (LCE) demand of the building. A life horizon of 50 years has been assumed. The study indicates that windows’ frame materials have a marginal impact on operational energy, whereas producing significant fluctuations of initial and recurrent embodied energy. In addition, the increase of window to wall ratio (WWR) has the highest impact on embodied energy. However, WWR has also a significant influence on operational energy demand.
