Abstract:

Although Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technology is useful for tracing the fluid flow or analyzing indoor environmental conditions, the process of creating a CFD model may hinder construction practitioners from best using this technology. A Building Information Model (BIM) presenting the target space may be used to speed up the process of creating the CFD data file as it carries rich data of a building. However, it is unclear how well the Building Information Model (BIM) can contribute to speeding up the CFD modeling process. This paper presents an experimental test we conducted to see how effectively one could use a Building Information Model to produce a CFD model for visualizing the Chilled Beam simulation. It also presents problems and barriers we experienced in the course of BIM-based CFD modeling process.
