Abstract:

A small, yet very innovate, rural health service in Victoria Australia has made a significant improvement in their workplace culture and compliance with mandatory education, by introducing a very easy and cost effective concept – FUN. The organisation has adopted the FISH principles, a very successful cultural change program originally based on an initiative at the Pikes Place Fish Marker in Seattle. The FISH principles are, choose your attitude, have fun, makes someone day and be there (Christensen, J, 2007, p 29-30). These principles provided the leadership team with an idea to re-design the annual mandatory staff education day to create a welcoming and fun environment that would encourage staff to learn With very little money but lots of ingenuity, the leadership team initially created a nautical experience in 2014. Dressed as sailors, the leadership team welcomed staff aboard the Compliance Cruise, handed them a boarding pass and either a Free Willy or Moby Dick lei. The success of the Compliance Cruise encouraged the leadership team to agree this type of education should be an annual event held in May each year. In 2015 the leadership team once again donned costumes –this time it was African animal costumes and staff were handed atarget pass card and welcomed to the Staff Safari. The passes are an important component of the education sessions as staff receive a stamp for completing each activity and completed passes must be checked for completion of the end of the day. Any incomplete passes are followed up to ensure that all areas are completed. All passes are placed into a box and one pass is selected – providing that staff member with a prize. Seven to eight mandatory areas are completed each year. Evaluation demonstrates clearly staff gave the day a high overall rating. In 2014, campus A- 95{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} and campus B -96.4{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}. In 2015, campus A -93{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}, campus B -100 {6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}. We believe this is an innovative model which can be adapted to any size organisation. Planning is currently underway for this year’s Staff Siesta to be held in May 2016.
