Abstract:
Governance of capital cities, especially federal capitals, is very different from the governance of other cities. Capital cities are symbols of the nation, seat of the national government, usually home to many national institutions and they also host foreign embassies. The national importance of capital cities, to a large extent, limits the democratic aspirations of the residents of the capital cities. This dilemma between the central control and right to self- determination of the citizens of the city is quite obvious in case of federal capital cities. In this paper, the governance of Delhi is examined, as a case study, to understand the problems of the governance of federal capitals.
