Abstract: Cyanobacteria are the paramount organisms known to produce large amounts of exopolysaccharides, which ultimately forms mucilaginous investments surrounding the cell. These extracellular polymeric substances are typically composed of polysaccharides, lipids, proteins in the form of heteropolymers or glycoproteins, as well as non-carbohydrate constituents such as sulphate, phosphate, and uronic acid. The advantages of marine cyanobacterial polysaccharides over other organism pertains to its wide functionality and constant reproducible biochemical properties. Recently bioprospecting EPS, as biosorbents has emerged as an alternative tool to the existing conventional methods, which in turn provides low cost and innovative methods. They are being implemented for removal of contaminants such as heavy metals, suspended solid matter from water resources, oil recovery and as strong flocculating agent etc. We here report the ability of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of marine cyanobacteria for heavy metal (chromium adsorption), textile dye decolorization from aqueous solution which can be used as a potential biosorbent. Also the biosurfactant property for various oils and biofloucculant ability of marine cyanobacterial EPS have been analysed.
