Abstract:
We report an effort to transfer methodology from urban transport planning to estimate the movements of persons in buildings. The example used is a library building. Visitor behavior is surveyed by counts and a questionnaire in which activities and locations are reported. Commercial transport planning software is used to set up a travel demand model using the survey data. Corridors, stairs and elevators are modelled as a transportation network and a traffic assignment is computed and calibrated with count data. The result is person flow volumes within the building. Finally we use pedestrian flow simulation to visualize the flows and assess the level of service..
