Abstract:

Presently, early research has been conducted in the field of urban heat island effect and urban microclimate on data collection and valuation, and making recommendations for police making and urban planning in the tropical cities, e.g. Singapore, however it is still rather difficult for the urban designers to practice without the useful tool and knowledge even though which had been produced by the urban climate scientists. On this basis the study focuses on “tropical public space” from the interdisciplinary perspective of urban design and urban climate to explore the practical method, CFD simulation – design loop, for urban designer access to the urban microclimate and apply the knowledge to build a thermal comfort as well as aesthetic public space for citizens. Firstly, the two dimensions of thermal comfort, social cultural and technological, was clarified. The study then summarizes the problem of current urban climate research that relying on the low resolution and abstract model, and the development of CFD simulation as an applicable solution. The CFD simulation – design loop is thus proposed as a useful tool and method for the research and practice by urban designers. Finally, this study suggests a systematic research on measurable elements of public space could be the future work.
