Abstract:
As a developing country, internal migration is an inevitable trend in Vietnam. Migration could increase the income of the household and reduce poverty, but it can also cause social issues in both destination and origin. By using pooled data VLSS 2010, 2012& 2014, this study aims to examine the impact of internal migration on children left behind regarding education attendance and child labor. With normal OLS and doing robustness check with IV regression, and different selected sample, we found that both work migration and household head migration could increase schooling attendance and education expenditure of family while it is harder to show the evidence in child labor. When we examine in different groups of children’s age, the result shows that internal migration has a positive impact on schooling attendance and the log of education spending in the household with ones aged 6-11 and 12-15. By contrast, it increases drop-out rate and working of children aged 16-17. In other words, work migration has a positive effect for primary and junior high pupils, but negative impact for high school students.
