Abstract: Studying literature was once upon a time a matter of prestige and means of aesthetic efficacy. Even some 40—50 years ago young learners would choose to study literature, only because it nurtured their aesthetic ideals and helped to deal with life with a more rationalistic perspective. No wonder at that time many literature graduates used to do extremely well in later parts of their careers. But these days the scenario has changed drastically. And by “these days” I mean recent 10 to 15 years. Career choices have indeed expanded drastically, which has impacted on the study of literature. In this paper I will specifically concentrate on the issue of English literature and how it is dangling as a minor interest among young learners in Bangladesh (or elsewhere in the world).
