Abstract:
A quasi-experimental study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of Information Education and Communication (IEC) package on quality of life among 400 patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in selected hospitals of Mangalore, India. Significant difference between mean Quality of Life (QOL) scores of the four different test periods in the experimental group was found, and QOL scores were highest (61.13{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}, 61.84{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465}, 55.23{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} and 61.25{6e6090cdd558c53a8bc18225ef4499fead9160abd3419ad4f137e902b483c465} respectively) in the “relation-with-others” subscale in the experimental group. Mean difference in QOL scores between the experimental and control groups in pre as well as post tests was found significant (p<0.001). Thus, the study showed that IEC Package was indeed effective for COPD patients in improving their quality of life. This is a customized nursing intervention strategy for tertiary prevention in COPD management. Focus on improvement in quality of life, other than the clinical parameters like lung function test or blood values, will be a more humanistic approach.
