Abstract: The Trump presidency in the United States has given impetus to the meaning of the term ‘fake news’. The result is that this word has to be re-examined to see how the conventional meaning contrasts with the term as used by the US president. Journalism as understood by many for many decades will not remain the same in this era. There are important implications for the future of the profession not only in the US but across the globe. Journalists have onerous responsibility to respond to this challenge and to keep their profession relevant and credible.
