Abstract: Arsenic contamination in ground water
is reported in valleys of Manipur especially in Kakching
area. Kakching is the second biggest town in Manipur with
a population of 28,746. Ground water samples of the area
are well contaminated with arsenic. Highest level of 111
ppb is found in Paji Leikai. The area was a peat land in the
past and patches bog iron deposits are still observed. Ore
Microscopy, SEM and XRD analyses of bog iron samples
confirmed the presence of arsenopyrite. We concluded that
the main source of the Arsenic contamination in ground
water of the study area is due to leaching out of arsenic
from the Bog Iron deposits.
