Abstract:

Today major aspects of Cold War ideology are being recycled to interpret the election of Donald Trump and the rise of European political parties long associated with the ultra- right to a level of influence that they have not had since the defeat of the Fascist Axis powers in WWII.

The major point of my presentation to this conference is that the use of these concepts which have played a central role in U.S. political culture are ahistorical and in effect provide a kind of intellectual cover for politicians like Trump in the U. S. and Le Pen in France, as they did for various military junta regimes and former appeasers of and collaborators with German Fascism and Japanese Imperialism both before during WW II and especially after WWII, when they were institutionalized in U.S. political culture.
