Abstract:

This paper outlines the problems of differential settlement encounter in Brunei Darussalam residential houses of which the government have spent considerable amount of money on the repair works. The paper discussed the geology of the country in general, and presented the design and construction of 2 major types of structures in Brunei Darussalam. The author conducted a preliminary observation to the damages of existing houses due to differential settlement and found most defects were identical on framed structures and shear wall dominant structures. Therefore, the author proposed a study on the structural behavior under the effect of differential settlement.
