Abstract:
Materials used in the external coatings of buildings influence thermal comfort. The choice of right materials in structural units and correct positioning are very important for ecology-based settlements. Although Erzurum has negative qualities such as high altitude and cold weather, it is an advantageous city, since the number of sunny and clear days is large. The surfaces of a newly-built building covered with a different material were analyzed with a thermal camera in the study. Meteorological data and thermal camera measurements were taken at 3 o’clock after it snowed on November 2017. The analyses showed that east facing facades were 0.7 0C colder and south facing facades were 2.5 0C hotter. It was also determined that surfaces covered with glasses were 2.1 0C colder than surfaces covered with composite materials, and composite and glass surfaces were 1.5 0C hotter than the others. Materials used in sidings and the different orientations of facades influence the thermal comfort of environment. For this reason, orientation and siding materials must be taken into consideration in order to obtain energy-efficient and thermally comfortable places. The study suggests the use of glass and composite materials together in cold climatic zones.
