Abstract: There are a number of intertextual rhetorical devices in political discourse. It mainly includes two parts: specific intertextuality and genre intertextuality. The former has reference, cliche, quotation, allusion, irony; the latter includes mixing different genres and different style. These intertextual techniques are widely used to support the author’s argument, making it seems objective and convincing, and hold the complete attention of the audience. In recent years, as a research hotspot in linguistics, many scholars have gradually shifted their research focus from literary criticism to critical linguistics in the study of intertextuality in political discourse. Taking the intertextuality theory, which proposed by Kristeva and the language analysis theory, which introduced by Halliday as its theoretical framework, choosing Xi Jinping’s political discourses which published in public in recent years as research corpus. This thesis adopts a qualitative method to analyze the characters of intertextuality in political addresses. This paper finds that as a rhetorical device, intertextuality can not only enrich the expression strategy of political discourse, but also helps to eliminate barriers and build consensus. Thus, it has social and practical significance. This thesis not only provides a different perspective of language analysis for political discourse, but also can be used for reference in future research. (Abstract)
