Abstract: Developments in South African politics have affected terminology development, management, and application, more especially in previously marginalized languages. The paper focused on developing an approach towards the development of political terminology in South Africa’s indigenous languages. It argued against the adoption of transliteration as a first strategy to terminology development in favor of a more pragmatic framework. The analysis was done using the translation and terminology development theory known as the scan and balance theory. It proposed different terminological procedures that terminologists can use to supply accurate and appropriate terms without making excessive use of transliteration.
