Abstract: Humorous speech plays an important role in our daily life. Based on Speech Act Theory proposed by John L. Austin and J.K. Searle’s contribution to illocutionary act, this present paper regards humor as a speech act which leads people to laugh. This paper summarizes the theory of humor based on the framework of speech act theory and regards the American sitcom Two Broke Girls as the study object. The first part of the thesis introduces the research background, the significance of the research, the theory used in the thesis and the purpose of the study. The second part introduces the speech act theory and the present study of this theory both domestic and international. It also includes the introduction of situation comedy and Two Broke Girls. The third part analyzes the speech humor in Two Broke Girls from the perspective of speech act theory, including the introduction of the reason why the humorous effects can be caused. The fourth part summarizes the paper, and puts forward the significance and shortcomings of this paper.
