Abstract:
Low birth weight babies are weak and tiny babies require extra attention warmth and special care. The care of low birth weight babies is a major challenge to the family specially mothers. This paper is the supplement entitled “Enhancing maternal knowledge in improving life of low birth weight babies. The previous paper has outlined the knowledge of postnatal mothers regarding care of low birth weight babies. This paper focus on the practice aspect of postnatal mothers on care of low birth weight babies. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the structured teaching program regarding care of low birth weight babies in terms of practice of postnatal mothers. A pre-experimental research approach was utilized in this study. A sample of 30 postnatal mothers of LBW babies meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. A pre-test was administered by a checklist for practice of postnatal mothers followed by teaching programme through the pamphlet. After 7 days post test was conducted. Informed consent was obtained for data collection and all the participants were informed the purpose of the study. The findings of the study reflected the poor practice of postnatal mothers but after the administration of teaching programme there was marked change in their practice. The mean posttest practice score ( 15.6) is significantly higher than the mean pre-test practice score (8.23) with SD of 1.08.The study highlights that the mothers lack skill in caring their Low birth weight babies and it can be enhanced through education on care of LBW babies. Structured teaching programme should be targeted to improve the skills of mothers resulting in the reduction of mortality and morbidity rates of LBW babies.
