Abstract:
Near Ni and Mo free duplex stainless steels with excellent strength – ductility combinations
were developed by replacing Ni and Mo with Mn and N. Examination of microstructural
evolution during plastic deformation of the present steels revealed that their superb
mechanical properties are primarily attributed to transformation induced plasticity in
austenite. It was found that annealing twin boundaries and grain boundaries also act as the
nucleation sites of strain induced martensite in addition to martensite band intersections at
grain interior.
