Abstract:
Automotive exhaust components like exhaust mufflers and silencers have a limited life due to corrosion. Surface crystallised aluminium coating followed by powder coating prevents components from corrosion, oxidation thereby increasing the service life. Crystallisation is done at various temperatures of 200ºC, 250ºC, 300ºC, 350ºC and 400ºC. Heat cycle test is performed for all the coated specimens followed by corrosion investigation. The corrosion behaviour of the specimen was investigated by polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) and the influence of the heat treatment was observed. After heat cycle there is significant improvement in the corrosion resistance and heat resistant behaviour of the component, with a corrosion potential close to − 650 mV vs. SCE. The results obtained by various experiments are presented and discussed in detail.
