Abstract: Using a qualitative approach, this study explored the experiences of 26 Korean university students using a mobile instant messaging application for English language practice. An analysis of data collected, consisting of online surveys, focus groups, semi-structured interviews and mobile instant messaging chat room content, revealed that mobile instant messaging supported students’ English language practice and cultural understanding in the short-term. Three factors of mobile instant messaging interactions facilitated this: 1) a blend of physical and digital chat room communication, 2) student-directed content and 3) the students’ ability to experiment, create and interpret the English language using the features and functionalities of mobile instant messaging, including the use of text, expressive visual images and internet content. Future studies could explore the possibilities of mobile instant messaging among international populations arriving in Korea, who seek interaction with Korean speakers, but are limited in their prior experience of Korea’s linguistic, social and cultural contexts.
