Abstract:
I argue that there are four types of relationships between great powers and small states: 1. dominance; 2. exchange (patron-client); 3. authority 4. 'special relationship'. We can use the main mechanism which is responsible for the two sides cooperating as the basis for distinguishing between them. Thus, coercion is the mechanism in the relationship of dominance; exchange is the mechanism in the patron-client relationship; the duty to obey is the mechanism in the authority type of relationship, and the duties of friendship are the underlying mechanism in the 'special relationship'. These four mechanisms enable us to classify the relationships between great powers and small states.
