Abstract: Halliday's Systemic Functional Grammar provides a new perspective and method for discourse analysis, in which interpersonal function plays an important role in establishing and maintaining social relations among people in their daily communication. Speech, as one of the most common language communication interactions, is widely used in daily life. Political speeches are frequently used in political life. While expressing their political aims, attitudes and powers, the speaker has to establish a good relationship with the audience. This distinctive feature makes the interpersonal function of speeches more complex. Therefore, this paper uses interpersonal function theory, taking Martin Luther King's famous political speech "I Have a Dream" as an example, to explore how interpersonal function is embodied in political discourse from three aspects: modality, mood and personal pronouns, and to verify the operability and practicability of interpersonal function in the analysis of speech discourse..
