Sister Village Model of Economic Resilience to Community Based Disaster Mitigation

Abstract: Indonesia is intensely hit by natural disasters, such as earthquake, tsunami, landslide, drought, floods and volcano eruption. The casualties, loss of property as well as the damage of public, social, and economic facilities are enormous. Poor people are the most vulnerable to the risks of disaster. Disaster risk reduction is highly needed particularly for those vulnerable people. Sister village model of economic resilience to community-based disaster mitigation evolves as the initiator concern about the hard time experienced by the Merapi victims who still struggling to go back to normal life after sixteen months post eruption. This paper aims to put into test the idea of sister village model of economic resilience to community-based disaster mitigation. The pilot project was conducted on Calvari group in order to know the response, the processes and the results of this model. Descriptive qualitative with Focus Group Discussion methods used in this project. The findings show that in the socialization phase very few of Calvari members agree and support the idea, some of them disagree and the rest is abstain. However, in the evaluation phase only very few people still reject the idea because they have not seen the benefit for them yet. Overall, they agree and support the model even they actively participate in collecting funds and encourage the expanding of this project.
