Abstract: This paper examines the role of mainstream Malay-, English- and Chinese-language dailies as well as alternative newspapers in promoting racial integration in Malaysia. The newspapers chosen were Utusan Malaysia, The Star, Sin Chew Daily and Malaysiakini. Interviews were conducted with an editor from each of these newspapers. It was found that the racial orientation of the vernacular newspapers is influenced by their history and background. In addition, the editors claimed that racial and religious issues have been highly politicized in Malaysia. It was also found that the pro-government ownership of Utusan Malaysia and The Star has an impact on the approaches to problems undertaken by the newspapers. Nevertheless, the Internet has helped to provide a platform for increased public discussion.
