Abstract:
The Indian Democracy pledges equality for all and non-discrimination on the grounds of sex, yet when it comes to inheritance of property different laws apply to different sections of society based on religion. It is women who have suffered disinheritance due to the existence of this colonial legacy. Although giving women their rights through enforceable laws are important, when it comes to access to resources it is customs which play a more significant part. In the Northeast of India customary laws are apparently favourable towards women and tribal women are believed to exercise more agency. Yet it is once again this disentitlement to land and property which actually determines their status and identity.
