Abstract:

In a study of 122 firms from the knowledge-based industries, we examined the effects of knowledge search on innovation and the absorptive capacity as the moderator on the relationship between the external search and innovation. We found evidence that (1) internal search is positively related to innovation, (2) the extent of external search has an inverted U shaped curvilinear relationship on innovative performance, and (3) the positive effects of an external search on innovative performance increase as the company absorptive capacity increases.
